Gen. 29 – Gematria 529

Family and Friends Gematria is the study of Hebrew Words related by Hebrew numbers. When we study Gematria it is to reveal the hidden. It is to give us greater insight in The Hebrew Scriptures.

Beresheit 29.5

  וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם הַיְדַעְתֶּם אֶת־לָבָן בֶּן־נָחוֹר וַיֹּאמְרוּ יָדָעְנוּ: ס

וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם

And he, [Jacob] said to them.

הַיְדַעְתֶּם

Do you know

אֶת־לָבָן

Everything from the letter Aleph to the letter Tav of Laban

בֶּן־נָחוֹר

Son/Grandson of Nachor?

וַיֹּאמְרוּ יָדָעְנוּ:

They said in unison, ‘We know him.’

Jacob’s question was a peculiar way of asking if they new Laban. Ramban gives three reasons why Jacob may have asked that question as he did.

First, Nachor are was better known than Laban.

Second, perhaps Laban preferred to be identified with his righteous grandfather Nachor rather than his sinful father, Bethuel.

Third, identifying Laban as the son of Nachor was actually about identifying Laban as the nephew of Abraham. Nachor was Abraham’s brother. Abraham was well known. He was a prince, a prophet, and an influential leader. Genesis 29 goes onto show how deeply Laban desired to benefit from the engagement of Rachel to Jacob, Abraham’s grandson. So while our passage uses The Word הַיְדַעְתֶּם Hah Yih Dah Tawm to identify Laban, i.e., ’Do You know [Laban]?’ Mystically הַיְדַעְתֶּם Hah Yih Dah Tawm identified the depraved side of Laban. אֲשַׁחֲרֶךָּ Ah Shah Chah Reh Chaw. Both are the Gematria 529.

Psalms 63.2 / 63.1 in the Christian Bible

O God, you are my God; אֲשַׁחֲרֶךָּ Ah Shah Chah Reh Chaw, I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land, where there is no water, i.e., ‘where there is no Torah.’

In actuality, Jacob was identifying that the land was dry and thirsty for water/Torah because of the stone that covered the well of The Torah, Genesis 29.8. The sheep we’re gathered. The sheep were SEEKING/waiting to drink water/Torah but the shepherds we’re lazy and uncommitted. That is when Jacob steps forward to remove the stone covering the well so the thirsty flocks could be watered. Mystically Jacob identified the need for Torah.

In other words, Jacob was an extension of his grandfather, Abraham. We who are the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob need to be about removing the stones from the wells of Torah so thirsty souls can come and drink.

Good Sabbath!
