{"id":1513,"date":"2022-03-19T14:34:15","date_gmt":"2022-03-19T14:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=1513"},"modified":"2022-03-19T17:50:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-19T17:50:37","slug":"9-sanctifying-g-ds-name","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/9-sanctifying-g-ds-name","title":{"rendered":"9 Sanctifying G-d&#8217;s Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Ninth Command: Sanctifying G-d\u2019s Name<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">You shall not Desecrate My Holy Name; and I will be Sanctified in the midst of the sons of Israel; I AM HaShem who Makes you holy.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Vayikra (Leviticus) 22.32<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24px;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05ea\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05dd \u05e7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b0 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05c2\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">And not \u2013 shall desecrate \u2013 everything from Aleph to Tav \u2013 Name \u2013 My Holiness \u2013 and I will be Sanctified \u2013 in the midst of \u2013 sons of \u2013 Israel \u2013 I \u2013 HaShem \u2013 Makes you Holy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">How can you Sanctify G-d\u2019s Name unless you first know Him and His Torah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">To Sanctify means to\u00a0make\u00a0holy;\u00a0set\u00a0apart\u00a0as\u00a0sacred;\u00a0consecrate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In Judaism it is referred to as Kiddush HaShem \/ Chillul HaShem<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Terms denoting the highest positive and negative standards of Jewish ethics, the one indicating that everything within man&#8217;s power should be done to glorify the Name of G-d before the world, the other that everything should be avoided which may reflect discredit upon the religion of Israel and thereby desecrate the Name of G-d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Rabbi Pinehas ben Ya\u2019ir would say: Torah study leads to care in the performance of mitzvot. Care in the performance of mitzvot leads to diligence in their observance. Diligence leads to cleanliness of the soul. Cleanliness of the soul leads to abstention from all evil. Abstention from evil leads to purity and the elimination of all base desires. Purity leads to piety. Piety leads to humility. Humility leads to fear of sin. Fear of sin leads to holiness. Holiness leads to the Divine Spirit. The Divine Spirit leads to the resurrection of the dead, And piety is greater than all of them, as it is stated: Then You did speak in a vision to Your pious ones. <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">(Psalms 89:20). \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Talmud \u00a0Avodah Zarah 20b<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Teach me, O Eternal, Your Way; let me walk in Your Truth; unify my heart to fear Your Name.\u201d Amen, so may it be His will. <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Tehillim (Psalms) 86.11<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">You must not desecrate:\u00a0 These words<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24px;\"> (\u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05ea\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc)<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">also mean,<\/span> <em>you must not make void<\/em>.\u00a0 Because we have a Divine soul we are continuously united with G-d. Dealing with <em>LIFE<\/em> the physical world can make us antagonistic to this connection.\u00a0 We may feel like we are estranged from G-d<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Behold, the Hand of the Lord is not too short to save, neither is His ear too heavy to hear. But your iniquities were separating between you and between your God, and your sins have caused [Him] to hide [His] face from you that He not hear.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 59.1-2<\/span>\u00a0 We must make every effort to ensure this gap does not develop\u00a0 ( the gap between us and G-d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">And the L-rd Spoke to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not believe me to Sanctify Me in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them:<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Bamidbar (Numbers) 20.12<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Moses and Aaron missed an opportunity to strengthen people\u2019s faith in G-d.\u00a0People we care about are sometimes hurt by our words or actions and we don\u2019t know exactly what we did to cause such offense. We must make a constant effort to consistently seek opportunities to Sanctify G-d\u2019s Name. We achieve this by always speaking courteously to others, displaying a generally cheerful and happy demeanor, avoiding Lashon Horah (evil speech about others), and providing tokens of kindness that may seem small to us, but make other people\u2019s day and help to affirm their faith and trust in God.\u00a0 We have an opportunity to sanctify G-d\u2019s Holy Name by constantly examining our actions and words down to the most minute detail.
