{"id":1544,"date":"2022-08-13T19:27:14","date_gmt":"2022-08-13T19:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=1544"},"modified":"2022-08-13T19:27:14","modified_gmt":"2022-08-13T19:27:14","slug":"11-studying-the-torah","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/11-studying-the-torah","title":{"rendered":"11 Studying The Torah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Mitzvah 11 Studying The Torah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Eleventh Command: Studying the Torah<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Devarim (Deuteronomy) 6.7<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Rabbi Meir would say: <\/em><em>Whoever studies\u00a0Torah for Torah\u2019s sake alone, merits many things; furthermore [the creation of] the entire world is worthwhile for his sake. He is called friend, beloved, lover of\u00a0G\u2011d, lover of humanity, makes Hashem happy, humanity happy. The Torah clothes him with humility and awe; makes him fit to be righteous, pious, correct and faithful; distances him from sin and brings him close to merit. From him, people enjoy counsel and wisdom, understanding and power, as is stated<\/em><em> Mishlei (Proverbs) 8.14: <\/em><em><strong>Mine are counsel and wisdom, I am the essence of understanding, and mine is power<\/strong><\/em><em>.<\/em> <em>The Torah Grants him sovereignty, dominion, and jurisprudence. The Torah\u2019s Secrets are revealed to him, and he becomes as an ever-increasing wellspring and as an unceasing river. He becomes modest, patient and forgiving of insults. The Torah uplifts him and makes him greater than all creations<\/em><em>.<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><em>Mishneh Torah Sefer<\/em> <em>Kinyan (The Laws of Acquisition) 6.1 Pirkei Avot 6<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A passage in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Berakhot.17a?lang=he-en\"><em>Berakhot<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Berakhot.17a?lang=he-en\">\u00a0(17a)<\/a>\u00a0serves as a source for the <em>utilitarian<\/em> approach to\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Torah Lishmah<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Rava was wont to say<em>: The purpose of wisdom is repentance and good deeds \u2013<\/em> so that a person should not read Scripture and study, and then defy his father, his mother, his rabbi, and those greater than him in wisdom and numbers, as it says, <em>The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the L-rd; all who practice it gain good understanding<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"><em> Tehillim (Psalms) 111.10<\/em><\/span><em>.\u00a0 <\/em>It does not say,<em> those who practice, but rather those who practice <strong>it <\/strong>\u2013 <\/em>those who practice for <strong>it\u2019s<\/strong> (The Torah\u2019s) sake, and not those who practice not for <strong>it\u2019s<\/strong> (The Torah\u2019s) sake.\u00a0 And whoever practices not for <strong>it\u2019s <\/strong>(The Torah\u2019s) \u00a0sake \u2013 it would have been preferable for him not to have been created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Thus, you will forfeit two worlds for when a person is occupied in this world with sickness, war, and hunger, he cannot involve himself with either wisdom or mitzvot which allow him to merit the life of the world to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For these reasons, all\u00a0Israel, [in particular,] their Prophets and their Sages, have yearned for the Messianic age so they can rest from the [oppression of] the gentile kingdoms who do not allow them to occupy themselves with Torah and Mitzvot properly. They will find rest and increase their knowledge in order to merit the world to come. <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Hilchot Teshuvah 9.1-2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Happy are Israel, who attain all, for they attain Torah!\u00a0 For whoever attains Torah attains the Holy Name.\u00a0 Happy are Israel in this world and in the world that is coming!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Attains the Holy Name\u2026 Because the entire Torah represents one continuous Name Of G-d<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Zohar 153a Pritzker Edition<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Surely of The Torah, which as it is written, <em>Then I<\/em> [The Torah] <em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">was by Him, as a nursling,<\/span> and I was His delight day after day<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Mishlei (Proverbs) 8.30<\/span>; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">now the day of the L-rd is a thousand years, as it is said For a thousand years in Your Sight are but as yesterday when it is past.\u00a0 That is the meaning of Knowest thou this of old time?\u00a0 The Torah knows what was before the creation of the world\u2026\u2026<\/span>.<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Tehillim (Psalms) 90.4.\u00a0 Bereisheit Rabba 8.2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Holy One, Blessed be He, Gave the Torah to Israel and said to them: \u00a0<em>You are taking Me, as it were!<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\"> Shemot Rabbah 33.6<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Where did the Torah originate from?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Two types of answers are possible.\u00a0 The first will locate the origin of Torah somewhere in the long chain of emanations whereby G-d\u2019s Will is realized:\u00a0 The Four Worlds, each composed of Ten Sephirot which mediate between G-d and His Infinitude and mortal man and his physical universe.\u00a0 In this case Torah shares with the rest of creation, to a greater or lesser degree, the nature of a disguise in which G-d Appears in the world.\u00a0 The second answer will ascribe the origin of Torah to G-d before the emanative processes began.\u00a0 In this case, Torah is a direct Facet of G-d, and in it and through it one can experience G-d\u2019s Presence immediately and without interference.\u00a0 Torah is then, in a sense, part of G-d Himself rather than the product of His Will after the beginning of the evolutionary process whereby G-d Turned outwards and, in successive waves of decreasing spirituality, brought the world into being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Clearly, the second is the superior origin.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Torah Lishmah\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Torah For Torah\u2019s Sake\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">In the works of Rabbi Hayyim of Volozhin and his contemporaries\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Norman Lamm\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">KTAV Publishing House Hoboken, New Jersey<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">And during the involvement with and concentrated study of Torah, it\u2019s certain that there\u2019s no need then for the matter of attachment at all, as discussed previously. For via the involvement and concentrated study themselves is he attached to His (Blessed be He) Will and Words, and <strong>He (Blessed be He) and His Will are identical<\/strong>.<em> This is the difference between the involvement with Torah and the performance of other mitzvot. The involvement with mitzvot ideally requires attachment (d\u2019veikut), while involvement with Torah is itself attachment\u2014no special intention or attention is necessary to achieve attachment.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">And this is the matter of their (OBM) statement in <em>Sh\u2019mote Rabbah (parshah<\/em> 33.6): A person removes a purchase\u2026 [from the marketplace], out of concern that its original owner will reclaim it; in contrast, the Holy One (blessed be He) Gave the Torah to Israel and says to them: <strong><em>It\u2019s as if it is Me you are taking<\/em><\/strong>\u2026 And this is what is written in a few places in the <em>Zohar<\/em>, that the <strong>Holy One (Blessed be He) and the Torah are identical<\/strong>. <em>Here Rav Chayyim introduces a primary theme, based on the Zohar, that the Holy One (Blessed be He) and the Torah are to be considered as identical\u2014that G-d and the Torah are ONE.<\/em>.<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 10<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Solomon spoke to us of the Torah.\u00a0 To seek wisdom is to seek Torah.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>6 <\/strong>Hearken for I will speak noble things, and the opening of my lips shall be right things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>7 <\/strong>For my palate shall utter truth, and wickedness is an abomination of my lips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>8 <\/strong>All the sayings of my lips are with righteousness; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>9 <\/strong>They are all true to the understanding one, and straight to those who find knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>10<\/strong>Take my discipline and not silver; knowledge is chosen above gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>11<\/strong>For wisdom is better than pearls; all desirable things cannot be compared to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Mishlei (Proverbs) 8.6-11<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Six Parts of Torah.<\/strong>\u00a0 According to the Vilna Gaon, verses 6-11 allude to six different parts of Torah: Scripture, Mishnah, Gemara, Midrash, Aggadah and Sod.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 6<\/strong> refers to Scripture\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 7<\/strong> which speaks of truth, refers to Mishnah,\u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 8<\/strong> refers to Gemara\u2026. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 9<\/strong> refers to Midrashic literature\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 10<\/strong> refers to the part of the Aggadah that teaches mussar\u2026. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Verse 11<\/strong> refers to the part of the Aggadah that is known as Sod&#8230;\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Artscroll Tanach Series Mishlei\u00a0 Mesorah Publications Ltd\u00a0 page 146, 147<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>22<\/strong>The L-rd Acquired me ( The Torah ) at the beginning of His Way, before His Works of old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><em>The L-rd Acquired me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><em>HaShem Made me at the beginning of His Way<\/em>.\u00a0 G-d Created the Torah before He Created the world\u2026..Torah served as a blueprint for the entire creation\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Before His Deeds of old.\u00a0 The Talmud (<em>Pesachim 54a<\/em>) teaches that seven things antedated Creation:\u00a0 Torah, repentance, the Garden of Eden, Gehinnom, the Throne of Glory, the Holy Temple and the name of the Messiah.\u00a0 Our verse, <em>Hashem Made me at the beginning of His Way<\/em>, is cited to prove that the Torah preceded the Creation.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Artscroll Tanach Seried Mishlei\u00a0 Mesorah Publications Ltd\u00a0 page 153-154<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Five possessions did the Holy Blessed One, set aside as his own in this world, and these are they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Torah, one possession;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Heaven and earth, another possession;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Abraham, another possession;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Israel, another possession;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Temple, another possession.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Torah is one possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written, <em>The L-rd Possessed (usually translated as created) me at the beginning of his course, at the first of His Works of old<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Mishlei (Proverbs 8:22)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Heaven and earth, another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: <em>Thus Said the L-rd: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool; Where could you build a house for Me, What place could serve as My abode?<\/em> (Isaiah 66:1) And it says: <em>How many are the things You have Made, O L-rd; You have Made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your Possessions<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Tehillim (Psalms) 104:24<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Abraham is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: <em>He Blessed him, saying, Blessed by Abram of G-d Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\"> Bereishit (Genesis 15:19). \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Israel is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: <em>Till Your people cross over, O L-rd, Till Your people whom You have Possessed <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Shemot <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">(Exodus 15:16)<\/span>. And it says: <em>As to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, My whole Desire (possession) is in them<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Tehillim (Psalms 16:3)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Temple is another possession. From where do we know this?
