{"id":1594,"date":"2022-12-17T23:18:58","date_gmt":"2022-12-17T23:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=1594"},"modified":"2022-12-17T23:18:58","modified_gmt":"2022-12-17T23:18:58","slug":"14-tzitzit-fringes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/14-tzitzit-fringes","title":{"rendered":"14 &#8211; Tzitzit (Fringes)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Mitzvah 14<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0<strong>Tzitzit (Fringes)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">Bamidbar (Numbers) 15.38 \u00a0Speak to the sons of Israel, and bid them that they make them tzitzit on the corners of their clothes throughout their generations, and that they put upon the tzitzit of the corners a thread of blue:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">Tzitzit are worn in order that <strong><em>you shall see it and remember <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\"><strong><em>ALL the Commandments of G-d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">And it shall be to you for Tzitzit, that you shall see <strong><em>it <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and you shall remember <strong><em>everything from aleph to tav <\/em><\/strong>of all the Mitzvot of HaShem, and you shall make and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which incline you to go astray: Bamidbar (Numbers) 15.39<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">The tzitzit are a symbol of the 613 mitzvahs.\u00a0The five Hebrew letters that comprise the Hebrew word tzitzit each have a numerical value, and the total numerical value of <em>tzitzit<\/em> adds up to 600. Now, add the numbers eight and five, as symbolized by the eight strings and five knots of each tassel, respectively, and so you have 613. When you wear tzitzit, you are a walking symbol of all the 613 mitzvahs. Don\u2019t forget them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">Tzitzit are worn as constant reminders to the eye of thought to be vigilantly conscious of G-d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We must always be cognizant that G-d is Watching every moment of our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Kehot Chumash<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">They shall make for themselves a tassel:\u00a0We saw above that all twelve spies traversed the entire land together, \r\nexpressing how transcendent Divine consciousness must permeate non-transcendent consciousness; \r\nhow our common unity of purpose and approach should inspire and direct our particular pursuits, \r\nwhere we each have different purposes and approaches.<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This explains the connection between the spy mission and\u00a0tzitzit.\u00a0Tzitzit\u00a0is one of the &#8220;general&#8221; commandments that in a certain way include all the others. As the sages say, &#8220;Tzitzit\u00a0is equal to the entire Torah.&#8221; This means that\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0expresses the all-encompassing, transcendent aspect of the commandments, rather than any particular effect the commandments have on us. Yet this transcendence permeates all of the individual and different commandments that the\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0recall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The\u00a0Ba&#8217;al Shem Tov\u00a0said that even the archangel Michael, the greatest of all the angels, would gladly trade all of his Divine service and recognition of Divinity for one of the four\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0worn by every Jew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">There are several possible explanations as to why the Ba&#8217;al\u00a0Shem\u00a0Tov chose specifically\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0to express the advantage of our ability to serve G-d over that of the angels:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The original blue coloring of the\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0was a reminder of the heavenly Throne of Glory.\u00a0Since the angels reside before the heavenly Throne, their direct view of it is obviously much greater than any reminder. Yet, the value of a person&#8217;s fulfilling G-d&#8217;s commandment, even though it is merely a reminder, is far more valuable than their entire service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The four corners of the\u00a0tzitzit\u00a0correspond to the four beasts of the chario that carry G-d&#8217;s throne.
