{"id":560,"date":"2020-02-01T17:50:06","date_gmt":"2020-02-01T17:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=560"},"modified":"2020-11-09T20:32:21","modified_gmt":"2020-11-09T20:32:21","slug":"equanimity-hashems-example","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/mussar\/equanimity-hashems-example","title":{"rendered":"Equanimity \u2013 HaShem\u2019s Example 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Equanimity \u2013 HaShem\u2019s Example<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Is there an example of equanimity that we can study and judge where we are on this journey?\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">As always we should look to the Torah for guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Bereishit (Gen) 1.27 So G-d Created man in His own Image, in the Image of G-d Created He him; male and female He Created them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e6\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e6\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05dd \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d6\u05b8\u05db\u05b8\u05e8 \u05d5\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05e7\u05b5\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">A<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">nd Created \u2013 Elokim \u2013 everything from Aleph to Tav \u2013 the man \u2013 in His Image(Btzalmo) \u2013 in form of (Btzelem) \u2013 Elokim \u2013 He Created \u2013 him \u2013 male \u2013 and female \u2013 He Created &#8211; them<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We can ask ourselves what it means to be created in G-d\u2019s Image, in His Form?\u00a0 This not only describes our created powers but it also should show us how we are to treat others.\u00a0 The inner drive to imitate the Source of all life, the Source of all love should fill us with the determination to accomplish this, in His Image, in His Form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">HaShem is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, Who revealed His Law to Israel at Mt. Sinai.\u00a0 Man \/ Woman is accountable for his \/ her deeds.\u00a0 We are expected to become aware of our spiritual purpose and endeavor to transform ourselves and the world around us.\u00a0 We are to transform from a highly developed animal soul into a transcendental soul.\u00a0 There are five levels of our soul. Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, Chayah, Yechidah.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Torah is our basic guide that shows us ways to emulate HaShem G-d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Why does it say <strong>(<\/strong><strong>Devarim (Deut) 13: 5<\/strong>): <em>One should walk after God<\/em>? Is it possible to walk after the Shekhinah? Is He not like a consuming fire (<strong>Devarim (Deut) 4:24<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>? Rather, it means that one should imitate His ways. As God clothed Adam and Eve (<strong>Bereishit <\/strong>(<strong>Gen) 3:21<\/strong>), so should we clothe the naked; as He visited the ailing (<strong>Rashi<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Bereishit <\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>Gen) 18: 1<\/strong>), so should we visit the sick; as He comforted Isaac after Abraham&#8217;s death (<strong>Rashi, Bereishit(Gen) 25: 11<\/strong>), so should we comfort mourners; as He buried Moses (<strong>Devarim<\/strong> (<strong>Deut) 34:6<\/strong>), so should we care for the dignity of the dead (<strong>Talmud<\/strong>, <strong>Sotah 14a<\/strong><strong>).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">And the L-rd Passed by before him, and proclaimed, The L-rd, The L-rd G-d, Merciful and Gracious, Long Suffering, and Abundant in Goodness and Truth.\u00a0 Keeping mercy for thousands, Forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children&#8217;s children, to the third and to the fourth generation. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shemot (Exodus) 34.6-7<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Who is a G-d like you, who Pardons iniquity, and Passes over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He Delights in mercy. He will again have Compassion upon us; He will Suppress our iniquities; and you will Cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.\u00a0 You will Show TRUTH to Jacob, and loving mercy to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> Michah<\/span> (<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Micah) 7.18-20<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Who is a G-d like You<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Who Pardons iniquity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Chesed\/Kindness\/Mercy to Abraham<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Which You have Sworn to our Fathers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">From days of old<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We are supposed to emulate our Creator.\u00a0 The reason we study is to learn more about how HaShem Desires us to be.\u00a0 He Created us with a clean slate and Provides us opportunity after opportunity when we fail.\u00a0 We have not felt the full impact of our failures because HaShem is <strong>Patient<\/strong> with us.\u00a0 We in turn must be patient with ourselves <strong>and with others<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is not an easy task.\u00a0 That is why Equanimity is so important to grasp and to implement in our lives.\u00a0 Without Equanimity Patience is unreachable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We must remember that All the the Almighty Does, He Does for good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We must also remember that\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain\u2026 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tehilim (Psalm) 127<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">All that one accomplishes on this earth is done with the Blessing of Heaven and with the assistance of Heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To build is difficult, to rebuild is even more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So how does one change so that our emotions and reactions are a choice not a reaction?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We as it were are partners with our Creator and work to become\u00a0 \u2026 in His Image Tzelem, in His Likeness Demut<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">If a person\u2019s physical form reflects the Supernal Form, yet his actions do not, he falsifies his stature.<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>The Palm Tree of Devorah Chapter 1<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What does that mean exactly?\u00a0 My Mother used to say <em>Pretty is as pretty does.<\/em>\u00a0 Form and Likeness are the Deeds of the Creator.\u00a0 We know Him by His Actions.\u00a0 We are known by our actions as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><em>Devekut<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0cleaving, is an act of seclusion and prayer a sanctuary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Devekut is profound concentration; spiritual attachment to, or unification with, the Divine; a communion with the Divine that removes one from physical awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">It is impossible to achieve\u00a0devekut\u00a0(attachment to G\u2011d) except by means of Torah and Mitzvot<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The Letters of the Torah enable us to absorb and endure G-dliness<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><em>\u2026To make the people of Israel meritorious\u2026<\/em><\/strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Lezakot,<\/strong> translated as <strong><em>to make meritorious<\/em><\/strong>, also means <strong><em>to refine<\/em><\/strong>. The goal of the Torah and its mitzvot is to refine the Jewish people. This intention is manifest in\u00a0<em>Pirkei Avot<\/em>, which teaches us to <\/span><u><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">lift our ethical conduct above the limits of human wisdom and cultivate it according to G-d\u2019s Desir<\/span>e<\/u>.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>Lubavitcher Rebbe &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em><em>In the Paths of Our Fathers<\/em> by Eliyahu Tauger (Kehot Publisher)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Pirkei Avot focuses on ethical development and personal refinement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When one becomes aware of the essential G-dly core of every individual, one appreciates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">a) the necessity to refine oneself so that this essential quality can be expressed, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">b) that every individual, regardless of his \/ her present level of development, has the potential to achieve such refinement<\/span>. <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>Lubavitcher Rebbe\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Tomer Devorah teaches us about Keter ( our head ) and the head of the Sefirot<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We must be humble (anavah)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our thoughts (chokmah) should emulate the thought process of keter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our forehead (metzach) should display no harshness. The forehead shows expression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our ears (Ozen) should always turn to hear good while falsehood or despicable things should be denied entry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our eyes (Ayin) should not gaze at anything despicable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our nose (Chotem) we should always remember that HaShem is constantly Breathing into us a living soul.
