{"id":598,"date":"2020-02-15T17:30:33","date_gmt":"2020-02-15T17:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=598"},"modified":"2020-11-09T20:31:33","modified_gmt":"2020-11-09T20:31:33","slug":"equanimity-removing-barriers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/mussar\/equanimity-removing-barriers","title":{"rendered":"Equanimity \u2013 Removing Barriers 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Equanimity \u2013 Removing Barriers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I stood between the L-rd and you at that time, to tell you the Word of the\u00a0 L-rd; for you were afraid because of the fire, and went not up into the mount <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Devarim (Deuteronomy) 5.5<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b9\u05de\u05b5\u05d3 \u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05d9\u05df \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9\u05db\u05b6\u05dd \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e2\u05b5\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d4\u05b4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05d3\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05b7\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0\u05ea\u05b6\u05dd \u05de\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea\u05b6\u05dd \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Anochi <strong>( I )\u00a0 <\/strong>Moses tells the Israelites that he formed a barrier between G-d and them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>( I )<\/strong> the ego, forms a barrier between G-d and ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">With the acquisition of Equanimity we remove this barrier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Who shall abide in your tent? Who shall dwell in Your Holy Mountain<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">He who walks uprightly, and does what is right, and speaks the truth in his heart<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">He who does not slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tehilim ( Psalm ) 15.1-3<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The first paragraph of the bedtime Shema goes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Master of the universe, I hereby forgive anyone who angered or antagonized me or who sinned against me &#8211; whether against my body, my property, my honor, or against anything of mine; whether he did so accidentally, willfully, carelessly, or purposely; whether through speech, deed, thought, or notion;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We must settle accounts with G-d before we go to sleep at night.\u00a0 If we truly believe that there is an accounting of the soul when we sleep and when we die we must take to heart what the bedtime Shema is teaching us about equanimity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">As long as a man\u2019s \/ woman\u2019s mind is settled,\u00a0 his \/ her intellectual spirit ( neshamah ) quietly stands guard.\u00a0 A man\u2019s \/ woman\u2019s soul ( neshamat ) is the lamp of HaShem;\u00a0 it seeks out all the hidden recesses. Mishlei ( Proverbs ) 20.27\u00a0 The Neshamah spreads it\u2019s light as if it were a torch atop the edifice of his \/ her body. The nefesh ( animal soul ) is sent to spread this light of knowledge throughout the entire body via the brain ( the neshamah ).\u00a0 So now one has free choice and control over his \/ her thoughts.\u00a0 One can exercise sovereignty over his \/ her nefesh ( animal soul ) and devise strategies to restrain the nefesh for one\u2019s benefit now and in the World to Come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We are born with a nefesh ( animal soul ) but we must acquire our higher souls, those that can connect with G-d.\u00a0 The nefesh ( animal soul ) is concerned with meeting it\u2019s needs.\u00a0 It is egoistic &#8211; <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>egoistic<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0limited\u00a0to\u00a0or\u00a0caring\u00a0only\u00a0about\u00a0yourself\u00a0and\u00a0your\u00a0own\u00a0needs -concerned\u00a0chiefly\u00a0or\u00a0only\u00a0with\u00a0yourself\u00a0and\u00a0your\u00a0advantage\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0exclusion\u00a0of\u00a0others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Attaining higher souls is accomplished by reevaluating our current life. We must turn from egoism to service of G-d.\u00a0 We must become part of the rectification, of tikkum, repairing those parts of the world that G-d has Surrounded us with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So it remains that the one of the first steps to Equanimity is to get to that state where we can see all of our circumstances as opportunities and not let them be detrimental to our journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">And the L-rd Said, I have Forgiven them in accordance with your word. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>However, as surely as I Live, and as the Glory of the L-rd Fills the earth that all the people who perceived My Glory, and the signs that I Performed in Egypt and in the desert, yet they have tested me these <u>ten times<\/u> and <strong><u>have not listened to My Voice<\/u><\/strong>, if they will see the Land that I swore to their fathers, and all who Provoked Me will not see it. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Numbers (Bamidbar) 14.20-23<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Do we sometimes feel that life is not fair?\u00a0 Is this attitude acknowledging that HaShem Is G-d?\u00a0 One Generation of the Israelites tested G-d 10 times and were denied entrance into the Promised land.\u00a0 They must have felt deep repentance when that judgment was pronounced.\u00a0 Is part of what we are experiencing a judgment for something in our past?\u00a0 How are we to know?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Are we praying, seeking G-d to get something or to spend time with Him?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Are we trying to improve out middot ( our character ) \u2013 or just coasting through life?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Do we want change or is the status quo ok?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our Torah knowledge is what helps us want to change.
