{"id":670,"date":"2020-02-27T23:12:51","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T23:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=670"},"modified":"2020-11-08T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T16:03:52","slug":"mussar-yirat-hashem-fear-god-part1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/jewishpath.org\/wordpress\/mussar\/mussar-yirat-hashem-fear-god-part1","title":{"rendered":"Mussar  Yirat HaShem\/Fear God 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Yirat HaShem<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Part 1<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">And now, Israel, what does The L-rd your G-d Require of you, but to <strong>fear The L-rd<\/strong> your G-d, to walk in all His Ways, and to love Him, and to serve The L-rd your\u00a0 G-d with all your heart and with all your soul. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Devarim (Deuteronomy) 10.12<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Yirat(Fear) HaShem (The L-RD)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Everything is in the hands of heaven except the fear of heaven. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Talmud Megilah 25a<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The Holy One, blessed be He, has in His treasury nought except a store of the fear of heaven, as it says, the fear of the L-rd is His treasure? <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Talmud Berechoth 33b\u00a0 Isaiah 33.6<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u05d5\u05b8<span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d3\u05b8\u0591\u05e2\u05b7\u05ea <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">vdaat<\/span><\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">and knowledge (Daat is a part of the Sefirot)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05ea\u05db\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"> chochmah &#8211; wisdom<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05a5\u05ea<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">yirat &#8211; fear<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">HaShem<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Wisdom and knowledge; fear of the L-rd, that is His Treasure. Isaiah 33.6<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Every man who has knowledge of Torah but has no <strong><em>Fear of G-d<\/em><\/strong> is like a treasurer who has been handed the keys of the inner chamber of the treasure but not the keys to the outer one, how shall he get into the treasure\u2026. The Torah is only a Gate for the <strong>Fear of G-d.\u00a0 <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Hirsch Commentary on the Torah Deuteronomy\u00a0 page 175<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Jerusalem, or Yerushalayim in Hebrew, is derived from the words\u00a0<em>yirah<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>shalom <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The end of the matter, everything having been heard, Yirat (fear) G-d and keep His commandments, for this is the entire man.<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Kohelet (Ecclesiates) 12.13<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Praiseworthy is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly desires His Commandments.<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Tehillim (Psalms) 112.1<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">And He said to man, <em>Behold, the Yirat (fear) of the L-rd is Chochmah (wisdom) and shunning evil is understanding<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Iyov (Job) 28.28<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The beginning of Chochmah (wisdom) is the Yirat (fear) of the L-rd, and the Daat (knowledge) of the holy ones is Binah (understanding)\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Mishlei (Proverbs) 9.10<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Moshe Chaim Luzzatto writes that there are two levels of\u00a0<em>Yirah:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><em>yirat ha\u2019onesh<\/em> where\u00a0<em>onesh<\/em>\u00a0means <u>punishment<\/u> and\u00a0<em>yirah<\/em>\u00a0clearly means fear.\u00a0 Fear of punishment for ones sins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><em>yirat ha\u2019romemut<\/em>, where\u00a0<em>romemut<\/em>\u00a0means <em>elevated<\/em> or <em>exalted.<\/em> Awe of G-d. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Mesillat Yesharim (Path of the Just<\/em>) Feldheim page 168<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">In Devarim (Dueteronomy) 31.8 Moses told Joshua<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">And the L-rd, He Goes before you; He Will be with you, He Will not fail you, nor forsake you; <strong>fear not<\/strong>, nor be dismayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Moses is reassuring Joshua that G-d Will Not Leave him, He, Joshua, will not be alone on his journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Moses received the Torah from HaShem on Mount Sinai, he taught it to Joshua and all the Israelites.\u00a0 He wanted them to understand the magnificence and awesomeness of being given the Torah.\u00a0 However he also cautioned them to be sure to follow all the Words of the Torah so that they would maintain the closeness to the Almighty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Consider how clearly it is stated here that the only object and aim of <strong><em>all the Words of this Law (the TORAH)<\/em><\/strong> is to [make man] <strong>Fear<\/strong> <strong><em>the Glorious and Fearful Name<\/em><\/strong>? That this end is attained by certain acts we learn likewise from the phrase employed in this verse: <em>If thou wilt not observe to do<\/em> .\u00a0.\u00a0. <em>that thou mayest fear<\/em>? For this phrase clearly shows that fear of G-d is inculcated [into our hearts] when we act in accordance with the positive and the negative Commandments.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Moses Maimonides Guide for the Perplexed \u00a03.52<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Rebbe Nachman reveals the true nature and experience of Yirat Hashem, Fear of G-d, which is the essence of Divine Service. The path to this <strong><em>ultimate goal<\/em><\/strong> requires faith and trust, prayer, hitbodedut (intense meditative prayer) study, and connecting to Hashem via the mitzvot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Genuine Yirah (fear) is living with the consciousness that only Hashem Controls and directs the events of our lives and the events of the world. This authentic Yirah liberates us from baseless fears and false worries which tend to dominate our inner being\u2014if we let them.
