font-size: 18pt;\">G-d Created evil so that we could conquer it.\u00a0 This is where Gevurah comes into play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When you go forth to war against your enemies, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The L-rd (HaShem) your G-d (Elokim) has\u00a0 Delivered them into your hands<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>y<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>ou have<\/strong><\/span><\/span> taken them captive. <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Devarim (Deuteronomy)\u00a0 21.10<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>HaShem is Chesed, Elokim in Gevurah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Both needed to balance each other.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Our souls contain seven middot (divine emotive attributes).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Gevurah is the fifth in the serfirotic tree and the second emotive attribute<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The word Sefirah from the Hebrew word lesaper (<span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05e8\u05dc\u05e1\u05e4<\/span>) means to express or communicate.\u00a0 It implies that the function of a Sefirah is to express a certain attitude.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e7\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d8\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1 \u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d0\u05d3\u05b9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4 \u05de\u05b7\u05d7\u05b0\u05e1\u05b4\u05d9 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u05dc\u05b0\u05e1\u05b7\u05e4\u05b5\u05bc\u05e8<\/span> \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc \u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b2\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8: \u05e1 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">But for me it is good to be near G-d; I have made the L-rd G-d my refuge, that I may <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>declare(tell, Lesaper)<\/strong><\/span> all Your Works.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tehillim (Psalms) 73.28<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">It is also related to the word Sapphire, implying that the function of a Sefirah is to give light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc <span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u05d0\u05b5\u05ea<\/span> \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05ea \u05e8\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b5\u05c2\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05ea <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e8<\/span> \u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05b0\u05e2\u05b6\u05e6\u05b6\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05dc\u05b8\u05d8\u05b9\u05d4\u05b7\u05e8 :\u00a0\u05e1 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When G-d\u2019s Gevurah is more active that His Chesed we tend to feel that He is far, far away.\u00a0 He only does this so that we would seek Him with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">But if from there you shall seek the L-rd your G-d, you\u00a0 shall find Him, if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Devarim (Deuteronomy) 4.29<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">During the High Holy Days we pray that G-d\u2019s Gevurah will be tempered with Chesed.\u00a0 Those days are days of accounting of our soul, days where we truly seek to acquire a Blessed year from HaShem.\u00a0 Our awareness of His Gevurah is heightened during those days.\u00a0 We should strive to carry those energies throughout the year, not just on Yom Kippur where it all culminates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Chesed is from the masculine side and Gevurah is from the feminine.\u00a0 Chesed is considered male because it expands, it bursts forth.\u00a0 Gevurah is feminine because it receives, it constricts.\u00a0 Abraham is associated with Chesed.\u00a0 He left his homeland and sought out relationships with others.\u00a0 He was always trying to expand by providing travelers with food and lodging.\u00a0 Issac is associated with Gevurah.\u00a0 He is the receptive party in the akeda.\u00a0 He was passive most of his life as is seen in the incidents of Rebeccah and Jacob.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Gevurah is the sefirah of emotion extended inward or away.\u00a0 It limits expansion.\u00a0 When we feel like moving away from something we are activating Gevurah.\u00a0 It takes a lot of strength to move away or limit ourselves in any way.\u00a0 Moving away or inward always has an element in it of limitation or contraction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The dictionary defines Emotive as &#8212; <em>Emotive is used to mean <u>arousing intense feeling<\/u>, while emotional tends to mean <u>characterized by intense feeling<\/u>. &#8212; Thus an emotive issue is one which is likely to arouse people&#8217;s passions, while an emotional response is one which is itself full of passion.\u00a0 <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">https:\/\/www.lexico.com\/definition\/emotive<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Feeling and Emotion are two different instincts that are often equated as the same.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Feeling is an instinct that is physical.\u00a0 The realm of feeling belongs to the animal kingdom.\u00a0 It is a response to internal and external physical stimuli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Emotion has faculties that no animal possesses.\u00a0 Our soul is emotional by nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Emotion is a combination of Gevurah and Chesed.\u00a0 Judgment (Gevurah) is passive,\u00a0 Mercy (Chesed) is active.\u00a0 Gevurah is the outer emotional aspect of a person.\u00a0 It is that part that assesses, values, checks and constrains the emotional life of a person.\u00a0 It reacts rather than initiates.\u00a0 Gevurah controls the impulses.\u00a0 Without Gevurah one could run amuck and become a tyrant.\u00a0 However if one removes Gevurah\u00a0 Chesed will drown one in fervor.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Adam and the Kabbalistic Tree Z\u2019ev ben Shimon HaLevi Page 157-159<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Gevurah also helps us restrain the Yetzer Rah (the Evil Inclination).\u00a0 Gevurah manifests the power to implement Chesed, it helps us refine our middot, our character<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 24pt;\">\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b5\u05e6\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u05d2\u05b0\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; Who can declare all His praise?\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tehilim (Psalms) 106.2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Originally it arose in G-d&#8217;s thought to Create the world with the attribute of stern judgment (Gevurah) (i.e., with total concealment of G-dliness); He Saw, however, that the world could not endure, so He Combined Gevurah with the attribute of mercy (Chesed).\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> Bereishit (Genesis)1.1\u00a0 (Rashi\u2019s Commentary) The Sapirstein Edition The Torah with Rashi\u2019s commentary page 4<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Israel had so many times where they did not have the Gevurah, the Strength and Restraint needed to follow the path G-d Set for them.\u00a0 They would have avoided so much pain if they had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What about our lives?\u00a0 When we reflect on our own behavior do we find incidents where we did not use our Gerurah, our Restraint?\u00a0 When we observe others, do we see where we can learn from them?
