The Fear Of All Fears! ©

By Dr. Akiva G. Belk

This study of mysticism in Hebrew Gematria is dedicated in the loving memory of Mr. Paul Sakash, may he rest in peace.

Fear is one of our greatest concerns. Each of us face and confront our fears. Some of us confront our fears with boldness. Some of us confront our fears with courage. Some of us confront our fears by avoiding them. Then there are those of us that confronts our fears simply by hiding behind locked doors and crawling underneath the bed. Sometimes we all feel like shutting the world out and hiding underneath the bed.

However that will not cure our problem. Yes, it may be our individual METHOD in dealing with our fears, but there is a better way.

Our concern here is fear. Many of the things we fear never happen! Dwelling on our fears can make us feeble! Thinking about our fears can weaken our courage!

The Story of a Young Sailor's Fear of Dying
Many years ago as a young sailor in the U.S. Navy, while out at sea I developed a large purple lump on the left side of my chest between my breast and arm. The medic aboard our ship at that time was a Reserve Chief Petty Officer on his two week reserve duty. I went to sick call. He reviewed my problem. He didn't know what was causing this purple lump. I asked him if he thought it might be cancer. He said, "I don't know, but it might be." He said when our ship arrived in port he would send me to a hospital to determine what was causing this problem. He was of no encouragement. He was not comforting! I was very afraid! Fear gripped me! I thought I was dying! The fear of death became very real ... I prayed! And I prayed!

One evening while lying in bed aboard the ship my thoughts drifted back to the only time I met my grandfather. I was very young at the time, around five years of age. My parents traveled with us children to my mother's parents home in Illinois to visit my grandfather who was quite ill. That evening my thoughts reflected on Grandfather, may he rest in peace! I remembered him sitting in the corner in a soft chair relaxing. His shirt was unbuttoned. On the right side of his chest was a purple lump. This thought gripped me... I was dying...

Eventually we arrived in port. I was sent to the hospital. The doctor examined me. He read the medical reports from the Chief Petty Officer. He chuckled! He commented that the Chief Petty Officer had diagnosed this purple lump as cancer. Then he informed me what I had was a very serious infection. It was an ingrown hair that had become severely infected. He lanced the infected area. Puss immediately released from the infected area, easing the intense pain and pressure. He cleaned the wound and gave me some antibiotics. I was released and the problem has not returned, thank G-d!

Holy reader, anyone can get caught up in the net of fear as I had many years ago. In our parsha B'nei Yisroel was preparing to enter the Promised Land. It would have been easy for them to get caught up in this net of fear. B'nei Yisroel could have focused on their enemies instead of on Hashem. They could have focused on their fear instead of the fact that G-d was going to defeat their enemies for them.

Dear reader, when we have the wrong teacher, when we get the wrong opinion and when we focus on the wrong things, our fears can greatly increase, G-d forbid! So as we travel towards Rosh Ha Shanah and Yom Kippur we need to focus clearly, focus on the fear of fears!

Now we can focus on our fears from the position of feebleness or we can focus on our fears in view of what Hashem has promised. On Rosh Ha Shanah and Yom Kippur our focus should be on our past mistakes, our failures and on our need to do shuvah. Our past misdeeds are many. They are our enemy!

It is at this point that we stand in the balance of life and death, that we face the fear of all fears. Will our name be erased from the Book of Life, G-d forbid? Dear reader, what we do in the next several weeks is very important. We may not realize the maximum significance of Rosh Ha Shanah, and Yom Kippur but that does not decrease or eliminate their importance!! Our actions during this time will weigh heavily on the outcome.

We read in one of this week's parshas, "Be courageous and bold, do not fear and do not quake before them: for Hashem, your G-d, it is He who is going with you, He will not enfeeble you ... " Deuteronomy 31: 6. Dear reader, it is clear from this passage that if Hashem is willing to battle our physical enemies for our good and for our safety then Hashem is also willing to battle our spiritual enemies. The purpose of Rosh Ha Shanah, and Yom Kippur is repentance... is shuvah... is returning to Hashem! Since that is the purpose, why would Hashem do anything but welcome us to a life of
improvement?

This verse's emphasis is upon Hashem's protection for His people. This is insurance! Hashem is reminding us to be bold, to be courageous and NOT TO FEAR our enemies! The word Protection is pronounced Sees Raw. The Gematria of Sees Raw = 665. This is the same Gematria for Kee - Hashem Elo Heh Chaw - Hoo - Hah Hoo Layk - Ee Mawk Loo Yar Pi Chaw which means, ".. For Hashem, your G-d, it is He who is going with you, He will not enfeeble you ... ". Holy reader, this tells us we don't need to fear our enemies! Hashem is there to defeat our enemies! Hashem is there to protect us!

The Gematria of Sees Raw is 665.
From right to left:

Sees Raw
665 =
Hey = 5 + Reish = 200 + Sav = 400 + Samech = 60

The Gematria of Kee - Hashem Elo Heh Chaw - Hoo - Hah Hoo Layk - Ee Mawk Loo
Yar Pi Chaw is 665.
From right to left:

Kee - Hashem
56 =
Hey = 5 + Vav = 6 = Hey = 5 + Yud = 10 + Yud = 10 + Chof = 20

Elo Heh Chaw
66 =
Chof = 20 + Yud = 10 + Hey = 5 + Lamid = 30 + Aleph = 1

Hoo - Hah Hoo Layk
72 =
Chof = 20 + Lamid = 30 + Hey = 5 + Hey = 5 + Aleph = 1 + Vav = 6 + Hey = 5

Ee Mawk
130 =
Chof = 20 + Mem = 40 + Ayin = 70

Loo - Yar Pi Chaw
341 =
Chof = 20 + Pey = 80 + Reish = 200 + Yud = 10 + Aleph = 1 + Lamid = 30

665 = 56 + 66 + 72 + 130 + 341

When we stand before Hashem on Rosh Ha Shanah, and Yom Kippur, we have the confidence to know that He will not harass us and that He will not make us feeble. He will protect us and He will lift us up. He will help us face our less than perfect past and change the future. He will guide us through the fear of all fears! He will inscribe our name in the Book of Life! Thank G-d!

Several weeks ago when discussing the Gematria 185 in Parshas Ki Seitzei, Managing Improper Control, we spoke about Ah Nee - Li Doh Dee - Vi Doh Dee - Lee meaning, "I am My beloved's and My beloved is Mine." We connected this to Li Hah Tzee Li Chaw, meaning "to rescue you," Deuteronomy 23:15. Our theme in this article was that because of G-d's love for His people He came to their aid. He rescued them! He saved them! He shielded them.

The Gematria Godal connection to the word Li Hah Tzee Li Chaw, meaning "to rescue you," is 665. The normal Gematria is 185.

Li Hah Tzee Li Chaw
665 =
Chof = 500 + Lamid = 30 + Yud = 10 + Tzaddi = 90 + Hey = 5 + Lamid = 30

So again we have confirmation of Hashem's great love and desire to rescue His people. Hashem is prepared to immediately come to our rescue. As mentioned in Parshas Ki Seitzei, we must first remove all disgraceful objects within us!! This is the key to opening all the channels of Hashem's love toward His people. The purpose of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is to do shuvah, is to remove all disgraceful objects so that our channels are wide open to Hashem's love and protection.

Wishing you the best,
