Readership Response
Dr. Akiva G. Belk, Director
Hello,
I have heard that in the jewish language there is only one letter
difference between the word truth and death.
I know truth translates to EMISS or EMET
I was wondering what the word for death is?
Thanks,
Rob
I really appreciate your helping me.
Subject: What is the difference
between "TRUTH" and "DEATH"?
Shalom Rob,
Normally other volunteers
and I answer the correspondence for JewishPath. However on occasion
we request that our director, Dr. Belk, respond. We have asked
Dr. Belk to answer your e mail. He has agreed. He is extremely
busy. However, it is on his list of things to do before Shabbos
begins tomorrow evening.

Shalom Rob,
Emes, "truth" is
spelled from right to left:
Sav - Mem - Aleph
Maw Vehs, "death"
is spelled from right to left:
Sav - Vav - Mem
Each word has three letters.
Both words share the letters Sav and Mem. You are referring to
the fact that the difference between truth and death is only
one letter. Truth has an Aleph. The Aleph is representative of
G-d because the Gematria of Aleph is "ONE" as G-d is
"ONE", and the Aleph is the first letter of the Aleph
Bais as G-d is and should be first in everything. Remember G-d
breathed His spirit breath into man and man became a living soul
{Genesis 2:7}.
Maw Vehs, death, does not
have the Aleph. Maw Vehs has a Vav. The Vav has the Gematria
of six. This is representative of man. Adam and Chava were created
on the sixth day, sinned on the sixth day and were expelled from
Gan Eden on the sixth day. Six also represents the descendants
of Eisov as discussed in Parshas Vayigash, "Unity of the
Soul."
For man to have, experience
and enjoy life he must replace himself, represented by the Vav,
- WITH - G-d, represented by the Aleph. Emes {"truth"}
brings harmony and life to man when the Vav is replaced with
the Aleph. Then man must rearrange his life by taking the Aleph
from where the Vav was and moving it to the front. Man must give
G-d the first place in his life, G-d must be given pre-eminence
in his life.
Rob, we at JewishPath wish
you the best!
